Revenge of the Sith
drew an estimated $16.5 million from midnight showings alone on its opening
day. In comparison, The Return of the King
only rang up $8 million on its opening midnight in 2003. Spider-Man did around $7 million. Revenge of the Sith then closed on a
Thursday, it's first day of release, with $50,013,859. That was the biggest day
ever for a movie in history. Pirates of the Caribbean II: Dead Man's Chest
now holds the record with $55,830,600. Revenge of the Sith then
raked in an estimated $35 million on Friday. The final prequel amassed $85
million in two days, which beat Spider-Man's
$83.0 million as the biggest two-day haul on record at the time.
Revenge of the Sith blasted off with $158.4 million at the end of its
opening weekend. It shattered the then four-day record held by Spider-Man 2's $130.5 million. By the
end of its opening weekend, it had notched new milestones for midnight
showing, opening and single day, two-day and three-day grosses. The most
impressive part of these numbers is that Revenge of the Sith did not
open during a Holiday weekend. Spider-Man 2 opened during the Fourth of July
weekend. Pirates of the Caribbean II: Dead Man's Chest has since broken
all of ROTS records however.
Revenge of Sith crushed the overall
foreign opening record with an
estimated $145.5 million five-day haul from over 9,000 screens in 114 markets
in 105 countries. George Lucas' final prequel topped the previous title holder The Return of the King's $127 million
bow and more than doubled Attack of the Clone's $69.1 million debut.
